Hales has been a principal of Envair.  Areas of focus include technical consulting in air quality and atmospheric sciences; co-ordination of research-oriented programs; meteorological/pollution model development and application, interpretive analysis of air-chemistry, cloud-physics and pollutant-removal processes.  Dr. Hales is currently involved in a variety of technical activities, including

bulletserving as Management Coordinator for the North-American Research Strategy for Tropospheric Ozone (NARSTO) program,
bulletconducting local, regional and global modelling studies in atmospheric chemistry
bulletdeveloping advanced numerical techniques for atmospheric models.

Dr. Hales is the orginal developer of the PLUVIUS reactive-storm models, and the team leader for development of the GChM global atmospheric chemistry model.

Prior to joining Envair, Dr. Hales worked at Battelle Pacific Northwest National Laboratory for 23 years as a scientist and manager of the Atmospheric Sciences Department.  His areas of research were in the atmospheric sciences, including chemistry, aerosol physics, storm dynamics, wind-erergy development, air/surface exchange, instrument development, and modelling.  While at the laboratroy, Dr. Hales led the acquisition, development and deployment of the DC-3 and Gulfstream-1 (G-1) research aircraft.  He has been an active team member in adapting and deploying advanced analytical equipment for aircraft use and has led several major field studies using the aircraft.

Dr. Hales is the author of over one hundred journal articles, book chapters, and technical reports dealing with various aspects of atmospheric sciences and engineering.
